WebbIt might not fix your issue completely, but I have a mod that allows me to visit other sims (at their house). In combination with the story progression mod it makes the game feel very similar to sims 3 and a good alternative since your laptop can't handle it :) I have both and I definitely still play 2 because of these 2 mods.
